Pats Make Vega Signing Official, Scott Likely Out
The New England Patriots signed OLB/DE Jason Vega about a month ago from the CFL’s Winnipeg Blue Bombers but the signing wasn’t made official until Tuesday morning because Vega hadn’t been released from his contract with the Blue Bombers.
Vega, 6’4, 255 played college football locally at Northeastern before the team discontinued its program. In two seasons in the CFL Vega had 12 sacks, and 66 tackles, with the Patriots however he envisions himself as being primarily a 4-3 DE.
“I think I will probably have my hand in the ground most of the time, and I’ll be moving in to three-technique in different situations,” Vega said in an interview.
So his signing most probably will signify the end of one year stint of DE Trevor Scott who was signed last year to provide depth and veteran presence, but his snaps were cut back early in training camp with the emergence of then rookie Chandler Jones. Scott is an UFA in 2013 and will likely be allowed to walk.
Vega is the second player signed by the Patriots from the CFL this off-season, having signed DL Armond Armstead earlier.
